Q: Italy has so much to offer. What’s your favorite destination there?

Mallory Fleming: While I can’t speak to everywhere in Italy, I sure loved my family’s vacation at Monterosso. Monterosso is right on the coast, and it’s a really beautiful spot.

Q: Tell us a little bit about Monterosso.

Mallory Fleming: We arrived by train and took a boardwalk down to a beautiful white sandy beach. Monterosso is part of the Cinque Terre.

Mallory Fleming Encourages Runners to Ramp-up with High Intensity Interval Training

Q: What is high intensity interval training?

Mallory Fleming: High intensity interval training, or HIIT, for a runner means incorporating repeated bursts of high-speed running into an overall running program. During HIIT, a runner may complete three to 10 repetitions at very high speeds, with a medium effort between each burst. The runner also maintains a regular warm-up and cool-down.

Q: What are the benefits of HIIT?

Mallory Fleming: For an experienced runner, HIIT is a way to increase speed, strength and endurance. The intense intervals pump a lot of oxygen into the blood and work the cardiovascular system really hard. By doing this just a couple of times each week, a runner can improve the use of oxygen for the benefit of the entire body. Additionally, running intervals helps runners develop better strides at any running pace, not just the top speeds.

Q: How can fashion give a person confidence?

Mallory Fleming: We’ve all heard the expression “dress for success.” I believe you can also dress for self-confidence, which can lead to success. With confidence a person’s options can be unlimited.

Q: Isn’t it a stretch to imply that buying expensive clothes will change a person’s life?

Mallory Fleming: I do believe fashion choices can have a personal impact, but an outfit doesn’t have to be expensive to be flattering. A lack of confidence can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. I once read a quote by Henry Ford that made a lasting impression on me. He said, “Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right.” If a person doesn’t have confidence, how do they reach his or her full potential? Without confidence, someone may not reach for a dream or strive for success.

A “runner’s high” makes athletes happy. What experts and scientists have suspected for years has finally been confirmed: Exercise has a huge impact on the human body. It serves as a pleasure booster and a painkiller. For 18-year-old volleyball player Mallory Fleming, this comes as no surprise. Voted “Best Defensive Player” on her school’s varsity team, Mallory Fleming swears that volleyball reduces stress and has a mood-enhancing effect.

Exercise has been medically proven to release endorphins much more than other activities. Endorphins are responsible for the feeling of happiness and general well-being. Therefore, exercise is a universal solution to bad moods or depression. According to Mallory Fleming, taking the first step toward exercising can sometimes be difficult. Mallory Fleming advises beginners to take the necessary time and not to expect too much too soon.
